Since the Romans founded the city of Palma in 122 BC, it has experienced an eventful history that has shaped its current appearance.
Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Moors, the kings of Aragon and Spain gave the city a character that makes it unique. The seaside location with the sophisticated port facilities, the phenomenal testimonies of the Christian reconquerors, such as the Cathedral of the Sea, the Santa Cruz Church and the many monasteries, the heritage of the Moors in the Arab Baths, the memory of the Jewish community in the district of the same name and the monuments that show the wealth that arose from maritime trade, such as the La Llonja Silk Exchange or the Consolat de la Mar.
There are also the palaces of the nobles, the rich merchants and privateers, and the historic administration buildings with the town hall, the parliament and the island council. A cornucopia of impressions, connected by cozy streets and squares, creates a magical place
.The tour takes you through the eventful history of the city of Palma and uses the historic buildings to explain the continuous development of the city into an important center in the Mediterranean. Anectodes and stories about the inhabitants and influential personalities complement the deep insight into the soul
of this city. One focus of our tour is the evidence of the different architectural styles that are reflected in the city's distinctive buildings. Above all, the Gothic style, which characterizes the cathedral, but which can also be found in the maritime trade exchange, in many churches and the Palace of the Island Council. The historic town hall, but also the famous St. Francis Church, has a Baroque façade. Renaissance elements can be found in the noble palaces on BORN, but also unique in the hexagonal bell tower of the market church of Sant Nicolas. And last but not least, the eyes can enjoy the lightness and elegance of the Modernism style, a development of Art Nouveau in the Mediterranean region.
